The Society publishes a quarterly magazine that covers humid, arid, coastal and Mediterranean growing conditions. It furthers the knowledge of native and exotic subtropical (and tropical) plants suitable for gardens in the milder parts of New Zealand. For those living in marginal climatic areas, there is also information on plants that look subtropical but are reasonable hardy.
The magazine has 40 pages, 12 of them in colour, A5 in format and has an annual index. A panel of advisory members, experts in various fields, endeavours to make sure that the information published is as accurate as possible and, most importantly, reflects local growing conditions. Members can obtain advice on plant identification, growing problems and the sourcing of often difficult to obtain plants.
Unlike most societies, SUBTROPICALS does not have regular meetings but holds an annual Conference and a Subtropical Plant Fair at the ASB Stadium in Kohimaramara, Auckland. This year the Fair, open to the public, will be held on Saturday and Sunday, May 27th & 28th, from 9am to 2pm. The Conference, for members and their guests, will be held from 2:45pm, Saturday May 27th.
